Just before winter break, some third grade students donned chef hats and gloves and politely served adults who work with them throughout the day.  As you can imagine, this activity was a big hit for both students and staff.  The students still talk about the day with a smile as "remember that day we made taco salad for our teachers?"  It was one of those school days filled with smiles, laughter, hugs and empowerment for our students.

Follow the link below those smiling faces for more information about how you make a difference at Maxfield.

Do you ever wonder how your donation of crafted goods makes a difference to our students?  Do you wonder what opportunities your donation brings to the Maxfield community of learners?

Well, here's how.  (And these are just a couple of examples. There are many, many more that happen all year long.)
  • You help provide basic items for all of our students, including uniforms, underwear, and warm winter wear such as boots, jackets, hats and mittens.
  • You help our amazing school nurse provide a little loving care with something as simple as a small paper cup of water, a couple of soda crackers, and something as crucial as nebulizer set-ups for students with asthma so they can participate fully in their school day.
  • You help teachers purchase basic supplies and instructional materials for their classrooms.
  • Your donations enrich the student's lives in many ways through field trips, creative activities and supporting our family science night.

We are looking forward to the rest of this school year and the wonderful projects, activities and field trip experiences you have helped provide for Maxfield students.
So, Thank You. Thank You.

You've already made a big difference to Maxfield Students this year.  We're eagerly looking forward to the rest of this school year.
  • The eagles are coming from the Raptor Center,
  • 100 Days of School celebrations are just around the corner,
  • the school patrol students will again compete in the all schools parade,
  • young students may experience the excitement of watching butterflies emerge.
Beyond those things, your generosity makes possible:
  • a trip to the MN Horse Expo with a chance to actually pet a horse (and maybe even ride one);
  • a chance to see a play and
  • the opportunity to replace some of those worn books in our library (they wear out because students use them so much.)
Thank You.

Getting Ready

For back to school!
You've gotta love shopping for new school supplies (well, at least I do!)

Teachers and "Friends" scour the local ads to get the best prices on school supplies.  From something as small as a pencil sharpener to a field trip bus, your contributions make a difference in the lives of our students.

As we move into the "new" year, we are excited to meet our students and families.  Because of Nettie & Friends we are able to bring experiences to students like never before.

The staff and students have been very busy working on improving our Maxfield courtyard - work that began last summer and continued throughout the school year and into this summer.  It is truly a work in progress that includes a new birdbath to entice even more birds to our "viewing station."  This small investment brings big smiles, great questions and wonderful observations from our students.  Teachers have to plan extra time to transition through the main hallway to allow students time to look for their favorite 'red' bird.  We stop to wonder how that squirrel manages to squeeze itself inside the bird feeder.  Thank you for your support in sparking a love of the natural world in a new generation.

Look for more news about what YOU help to bring to Maxfield.

While getting ready for this new school year, I know friends are also gearing up for this year's Sale of the Season in December.  Watch for more updates about the sale and other ways to support Maxfield School through Nettie & Friends.

Time Flies When You Are Having Fun (and Learning!)

Check out the smiles on the faces of these Kindergarten students.  They are busy celebrating 100 days of school.  Counting.  Making patterns.  Smiling.  Making a necklace.  You helped this happen.

How to make a 100 days of school necklace:
First, you count out ten groups of ten.

Then, you check with your friends and start                     stringing your ten groups of ten in a colorful pattern.

Then, you celebrate (and say "Thank you.)

If You Give a Student a Book...

If you give a student a book, you open their world.  With 96% of students at Maxfield living at or below the poverty line, parents often find it difficult to provide books in home libraries for their children.

The Scholastic Book Fair in mid-November provides an opportunity for Maxfield students to get books of their own – and to enrich the Maxfield library.  It works like this:  A $5 donation allows a student to shop for a book to take home.  When we give every one of Maxfield’s 420 students a $5 gift, the Maxfield Library receives materials worth over $2,000.

We have a donor willing to give us $500 if we can raise the $1,600 necessary to give each child a chance to shop for a book.

Will you help us reach that goal?  You can send Nettie & Friends your tax-deductible donation for this project by check made payable to Nettie & Friends and mailed to Maxfield School, 380 N. Victoria Street, Saint Paul MN 55104 or by visiting nettieandfriends.blogspot.com and clicking on our PayPal button on the right hand column.

Gather the Goods

On Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 9 AM - 11 AM  Nettie & Friends Board Members will be at the Egg & I to "gather the goods."  Unlike former years, there will not be an organized breakfast.  There will be time to chat with Board Members to learn what wonderful projects you help support at Maxfield School.

If you are unable to stop by the Egg & I on Saturday, November 1st, please drop off donated items at Maxfield School, 380 N. Victoria Street, Saint Paul Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:45AM and 4:00PM.  (Please note: school dismissal is at 3:00 so our front entrance is very busy between 2:55 PM and 3:20PM.)   Please let the office staff know your items are for Nettie & Friends.

Need help getting items to Nettie & Friends?  Please contact Jean Johnson by email to make arrangements for picking up / dropping off your items: jeanoventile@gmail.com

How about a Night with Nettie & Friends in the comfort of your own home?

In addition to our annual fundraising sale at the Egg & I we are excited to announce "A Night with Nettie & Friends" in home gatherings.  Here's how it works: A Nettie & Friends hostess / host will arrange with you to bring select items to your home for a gathering of friends.  A Maxfield staff member will also be in attendance to share the Maxfield story.  As you know, with 96% of students living at or below the poverty level and with the highest rate of homelessness in St. Paul, Maxfield School has many unique challenges.  One of those significant challenges is fundraising to help with basic school needs and enrichment activities.  We appreciate your support in so many ways.  If you are interested in more information about hosting a home gathering, please contact: Jenelle via email at:
16LeoLove@gmail.com
